New Inn Hotel, Clapham - Local Walks

Pub Walk
Distance: 6.5 miles

This is a spectacular walk exploring the wild Yorkshire landscape of the Three Peaks. This is potholing adventure country: a subterranean world of passages, caves and waterlogged caverns.

From the New Inn turn right into the road alongside Clapham Beck. At the church turn right - it is signposted Austwick - and follow the lane through the tunnels, up the hill to the top. Turn right, into Thwaite lane, towards Austwick. Continue down the lane, with views ahead towards the North Craven Fault. Climb the ladder stile on your left and follow the wall running below Norber Brow. When the wall turns right, follow the path up to the left to what is known as Norber 'erratics' - large boulders lifted by glaciers from Crummockdale and deposited on the limestone shelves of Norber Brow. Go over the ladder stile and down to the lane. Turn left on the lane, pass the entrance to Sowerthwaite farm and up to Crummock Farm. Through the stile to the waymark and the take the springy green path sweeping up the left. At a point where the path levels and Ingleborough Massive appears on the skyline, look for a path turning to the left - a good point to admire the all round views.

Go down the broad, grassy track, over a stile ladder and to the top of Long Lane. Go down the lane to another ladder stile on your right. Go over and descend the short, steep path to a wide track. Turn left, down to an old packhorse bridge and past the entrance to Ingleborough Cave. Continue to Clapham Woods and the start of the nature trail. The trail was established in 1970 to commemorate the life and work of Reginald Farrer, a botanist and plant collector specialising in alpines and rhododendrons. Further along the narrow path on your left you reach the edge of a bank where rhododendrons grow in acid soil. Pass alongside a lake and when you reach the sawmill and yard, turn left into the village and return to the Inn for some well deserved refreshments!
